New York aims to break offensive slump at Toronto

Soccer Betting Lines

08/20/2010 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Red Bull New York travels to take on Toronto FC at BMO Field as the two Major League Soccer clubs meet for the second time in 10 days on Saturday afternoon.

Toronto has been off in league play since the previous meeting, a 1-0 New York win at Red Bull Arena on Aug. 11.

"Well I thought we played pretty good," TFC coach Preki said after the loss. "I thought we were the more dangerous team in the first half. Against the run of play they get a goal. But we have to regroup. I'm really happy with the group, they played their hearts out. We had our chances. They have some of the best players in the world in that lineup, and for us to not give up too many chances, it was a very good team effort. I don't think [goalkeeper] Stefan [Frei] made any saves tonight. Disappointing result for us. Hopefully we continue to progress."

Toronto (7-7-5) has progressed since that match, earning an important 2-1 win over Mexican side Cruz Azul in the group stage of the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday.

"It's always great to win, especially [vs.] an opponent like Cruz Azul," TFC Director of Soccer Mo Johnston told his club's official website. "It was big for the team, for the league. I felt for the whole 90 minutes, we were terrific.

"It's a benchmark game, not only for the franchise but for the MLS as a whole. They want us to compete, to win games, and we showed we could do that. It's a serious benchmark for the league and for Toronto FC."

Now Toronto must turn its attention back to league play at BMO Field, where it has yet to lose this season, going 6-0-4.

New York (9-7-4) will be gunning for a road victory after dropping its last MLS fixture, 1-0, at home to the Los Angeles Galaxy last weekend. With the loss, New York has now scored just one goal in its last three games, going 1-1-1. All this despite the recent acquisitions of international stars Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez.

"I think it is the most difficult thing to do in [soccer] is to score goals," New York coach Hans Backe told mlssoccer.com. "I do think that, in a way, the balance of our team and our possession has looked rather good."

The Red Bulls are hoping that once their new stars get adjusted to the league, the offense will open up. Currently, Henry has yet to score a goal in MLS, and Marquez committed a costly turnover that led to the only goal in the loss to L.A. last weekend.

"It'll be fine," New York striker Juan Pablo Angel said. "Any player needs to be in a good form in order for him to perform and bring the best out of him. And the only way [Marquez is] going to do it is by playing games. We've got to have a little bit of patience with him, and also with Henry because people expect too much right from the very beginning. They are going to be absolutely fine, and I think they're going to be very important for this team. Not just for the rest of the season, but for years to come."

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
