Mountaineers battle Terriers for SoCon title

Charlotte, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Wofford Terriers make their first-ever
appearance in the title game of the Southern Conference Tournament tonight as
they tangle with the Appalachian State Mountaineers for the right to move on
to the NCAA Tournament.
The top seed from the South Division of the conference, Wofford entered this
year's event with a record of only 5-11 all-time, but the squad made easy work
of UNC Greensboro on Saturday with a 59-47 win, and then took care of Western
Carolina with an even more comfortable 77-58 triumph last night.
As for the Mountaineers, the top seed from the North Division, their goal is
to win their first SoCon crown since 2000. ASU took care of The Citadel on
Saturday (71-61) and then defeated the College of Charleston on Sunday night
with a lopsided 77-54 final to advance to the championship round at Time
Warner Cable Arena.
The Mountaineers won the only meeting of the season between these two teams by
a scant 77-76 score back in early December. As a result, ASU now leads the
all-time series by a count of 22-10.
Terry Martin came off the bench to tally 17 points, leading four players in
double figures, as the Wofford Terriers picked up the 19-point win over the
Western Carolina Catamounts yesterday. Noah Dahlman registered a double-double
for the Terriers with his 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamar Diggs and Tim
Johnson delivered 12 and 10 points, respectively. The charity stripe played a
huge role in this meeting as Wofford outscored Western Carolina by a count of
30-11 at the line. The scoring burst by Martin was rather unexpected given
that he is averaging just 4.5 ppg on the season. Dahlman remains the lone
double-digit scorer for the program with his 17.0 ppg, shooting 58.8 percent
from the floor and 69.9 percent at the free-throw line for a team that is
outscoring opponents by more than eight points per contest.
Kellen Brand erupted for a career-high 37 points as he led the Mountaineers to
a 23-point win over the College of Charleston on Sunday. Brand finished the
night shooting not only 14-of-19 from the floor but also 5-of-6 beyond the arc
for the Mountaineers, while Isaac Butts registered a double-double with 10
points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Josh Hunter contributed 12 points and
eight boards and Donald Sims 10 points and eight rebounds in the win as well.
Appalachian State turned the ball over 20 times on the night, but made up for
it by leading the way on the glass, 46-26. Brand's scoring average has now
been bumped up to 11.7 ppg, but that is still a long way behind Sims and his
20.3 ppg, stemming from his 43 percent shooting from three-point range and a
nation-leading 95.2 percent at the free-throw line. Because Sims has been so
successful at the charity stripe, the team as a whole is converting a solid
74.1 percent over the course of 33 games.
